Upgrading Retrospect 8 to a new version is a two step process. The automatic update feature found in Retrospect 8 will automatically download and install an update to the Retrospect Console but it is unable to update the Retrospect engine itself.
Go to the computer running the Retrospect 8 Engine and download the latest version of Retrospect 8. Updates are found on the Retrospect Update Page.
Open the Roxio Retrospect 8 disk image you downloaded and run the Install Retrospect Engine.pkg. Once the engine has been installed then the Retrospect engine should be able to communicate with the console.
