Cloud Data Protection - Protect Data on Google Cloud Storage

Google Cloud Storage provides a low-cost, scalable cloud storage location for a multitude of corporate assets. Companies use cloud storage for all sorts of data, from website assets to affordable sharing to ingestable data, and Retrospect Backup includes cloud data protection support for cloud storage as a first-class backup volume. Cloud volumes enable businesses to protect their cloud content on-site with an incremental backup or on a different cloud with an automated policy-driven workflows.

Information for Retrospect

Retrospect needs three pieces of information to access Google Cloud Storage:

• Path – storage.googleapis.com/your_bucket_name
• Access Key – Use the Access Key from above.
• Secret Key – Use the Secret Key from above.

Step-by-Step Guide

Cloud data protection is easy with Retrospect. Let’s walk through adding a Google Cloud Storage volume to Retrospect and then setting up a policy to protect it on-premise.

1. Google Cloud Console: You will need the bucket and path location.

1. Google Cloud Console: You will also need the Access Key and Secret Key. These are available under Settings > Interoperability.

1. Retrospect: Click on "Volumes" (Windows) or "Sources" (Mac).

1. Retrospect: Select "Google Cloud Storage".

1. Retrospect: Type in your location information from above and click "OK".
2. Retrospect: Create a backup script policy for protecting that volume by clicking "Backup Now" (Windows) or "Backup" (Mac).

1. Retrospect: You can now protect your cloud volume using Retrospect, either in another cloud destination or on-premise.

Account Setup Guide

Follow these steps to quickly create a Google Cloud account. It requires an existing Google Account. If you do not already have one, create one for free at Google Accounts.

1. Visit Google Cloud and click "Try it free".

1. Complete the form with contact information and payment information.

1. Visit Google Cloud Platform to see your new account.

Storage Setup Guide

Now we will create a bucket that Retrospect can use to store backups.

1. Visit Google Cloud Platform, click "Select a Project", and select "Create a new project". Choose a name and click "Create".

1. Your project is now created. Next, click "Create bucket".

1. Choose a name, a storage class, and a location. This name is unique across Google Cloud Storage.

1. Your new bucket is now created. In Retrospect, the "Path" is storage.googleapis.com/your_bucket_name.
